Ian received his BSc (1973) in Electrical Engineering and MSc (2001) in Computer Science from the University of British Columbia. He has previously held the positions of Senior Electrical Engineer for the Vancouver Skytrain Project (1981-1986), Senior Software Engineer for Glenayre Research (1986 – 1990), Head of Research for Ledalite (1990 – 2002), and Senior Research Scientist for TIR Systems / Philips Lighting (2000 – 2010), and is currently also Senior Scientist for Cooledge Lighting. He is a Fellow of the IESNA, a CIE Advisory Member, former co-chair of the SPIE Solid-State Lighting Conference (2005 – 2009), and former chairs of the IES Computer and Calculations Committees. He has written one book (Radiosity: A Programmer’s Perspective), 36 academic papers, 66 articles, and 6 book chapters (including Chapter 9 of the IES Lighting Handbook, Ninth Edition), and holds more than 100 patents and patents pending in the fields of solid-state lighting. He has been responsible for the lighting calculation and visualization software of AGi32 since 1997.
